With the arrival of children, many new parents start to rethink what they’re bringing into their homes – from everyday cleaning products sprayed around the house, to the soaps and lotions used to care for their baby’s skin.
Unfortunately, many of the products that we use regularly to clean our homes, wash our clothes or cleanse our skin contain substances and chemicals that are detrimental not only to the environment, but also to the health and wellbeing of our families.
These regular cleaning products and cosmetics are often made from harsh cocktails of chemicals, which can be very bad for your baby’s health, whether applied directly to your child’s skin or inhaled through the air in the home.
It’s important that parents are aware of the harsh effects of using toxic chemicals in the home. One of the best things you can do for your family is to get back to basics and look for greener ways to clean, using eco-friendly chemical-free home products.
The Benefits of Using Eco-Friendly Products in Your Home
Environmentally-friendly cleaning products have been around for decades – in fact, it’s very likely that your grandmother used safe and common household items like lemon, white vinegar and baking soda on a regular basis to keep the family home spick and span!
There are many benefits of using eco-friendly cleaning and body care products in the home, for both the environment and your family.
By switching to greener home care, you’ll be helping to reduce pollution to our planet’s waterways, while minimising your impact on ozone depletion and climate change. With many eco aware products being made from recycled and recyclable packing, you’ll also be contributing to less waste and landfill.
As well as contributing to positive change for the environment, you’ll be bringing a number of benefits to your home and family, including:
- Safer products, with no risk of chemical burn to skin or eyes
- Better air quality in your home
- No strong chemical odour, just natural essential oils
- A lower risk of respiratory problems such as asthma
- Less risk of skin conditions or irritation, including eczema
Vicki’s Switch to Eco-Safe Products in the Home
Vicki Williams, owner of SafeClean&Crafty and mother of four, became interested in using eco-friendly cleaning and body care products after the birth of her first child.
Vicki found herself looking for safer, greener alternatives to use around the home – as she says, she “wanted to find the most gentle, safest products possible to use on and next to my beautiful, delicate baby.”
Vicki’s cousin was also exploring eco-friendly brands to use at home, and sent Vicki a sample of some cleaning products that she felt were safe to use around her own baby. Vicki gave green cleaning a shot and hasn’t looked back.
“Since then I have delighted in being able to use safe, gentle products around each of my four babies – and even now that my babies are all not so delicate teens, we still enjoy using the same eco-safe products. I am happy that my kids are learning to clean with products that are safer for them and safer for the environment – keeping that all important eco footprint as light as possible. Hopefully they will carry this tradition on to their own families and children in the future,” Vicki says.
After making the switch to chemical-free cleaning products, Vicki noticed some other surprising benefits. Using environmentally-friendly products in the home brought several health benefits to Vicki’s family, with a reduction in headaches, coughing, breathing problems and skin irritations such as eczema, which Vicki herself had suffered from since she was a child.
She’s also noticed a more positive change in her mood after using eco products, as opposed to cleaning with the strong smell of chemical sprays. “I actually feel uplifted after using the products, as they have such a lovely smell from the essential oils used in them – it’s aromatherapy as I clean!” Vicki smiles.
Vicki was so inspired by her journey with eco-friendly home products, and so passionate about sharing their benefits with others, that she now runs her own business selling eco-safe products and services.
